Sparta Academy got its name from the original Sparta Academy that served as the school in the town of Sparta, the second seat in Conecuh County. Sparta was located on the east side of Murder Creek half way between Evergreen and Castleberry.
In October 1969, Sparta Academy began simply in the Griffin House on Main Street in Evergreen, Alabama. The student body consisted of fourteen students in grades kindergarten through fourth.
During 1970-1971, the school operated in two temporary facilities. Grades 1-6 were held in the Stallworth House on Main Street, while the Headmaster at that time, Mr. M.C. Thompson, oversaw grades 7-10 at the Murphy Club on the other side of town. It was not until the 1971-1972 school year that Sparta Academy permanently came home to “the hill” at 200 Pierce Street. Our main building housed grades K-12 with outstanding student enrollment of 276 students.
The 1971-1972 school year brought many firsts for Sparta Academy. It was the first year of all twelve grades, first varsity football and basketball teams, and first graduating class of 19 seniors.
Through the generous donations of alumni and friends, a number of additions and renovations have become possible for Sparta. Together with the main building and football field in 1971, we have added the following facilities to our campus:
  • Field House – 1972
  • Gymnasium – 1973-1974 – Renovated in 2003
  • K4-K5 Building – 1995
  • K4-K5 Playground – 1995
  • Softball Field – 1995-1996
  • Baseball Field – 1996-1997
  • Storage Shed – 1999
  • Elementary Playground – Renovated in 2004
Our added facilities have created an institution that gives students an opportunity to excel in academics, sports, and extra-curricular activities. We are proud to have been a mainstay in the community for 34 years. We are equally proud to be accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.

We are fortunate to have a school of this caliber in a county where the cost of living is well below the national average and the unemployment rate is at 7.8%. Parental involvement, together with community support, continues to create a positive, safe, and rewarding atmosphere for children in Conecuh County and the surrounding areas.
